Campaign Goals

Fixing the big problems in our industry is possible only if we come together as a group to collectively negotiate with production companies. Lasting solutions will not be found if people are left to deal with issues one-on-one.

This is what we’ve heard from you about what needs to change in our industry:

Building a sustainable and successful industry

End to the downward pressure on working conditions that pushes people out of the industry
Create a positive work environment that attracts skilled workers and encourages them to stay for the long term

Consistency of working conditions

Clear and fair working conditions spelled out in a collective agreement
No need to renegotiate individual deals every season

Fairness in Pay

Basic minimums for each job and regular wage increases
End to wage theft

Health and Safety

Standards that are respected and the ability to say no to unsafe work.
Paid sick days and health benefits

Work/Life Balance

Right to say yes or no to overtime hours
End to arbitrary unpaid hiatuses

By 2014 I noticed colleagues I had worked with for years were starting to leave the industry because of the unstable and unhealthy working condition. More disheartening was the idea that they didn't believe it was going to get better. I thought I have to do something to preserve the industry that I love and to make it better for everyone. I partnered with the Canadian Media Guild and we began work on a standards and practices guide. By May of 2015, the first edition of what is known today as the "little red book" was launched. A year later, the book was added to the Ontario Media Development Corporation library as a reference tool for the factual TV industry. Now we need to get rules that are agreed to by both workers and production companies. That's why we need people to join this campaign, so that everyone is represented.
